The Bold and The Beautiful

I’m not sure whether its my excitement at the onset of some sunshine and warmer weather which means a move away from cosy knits and therefore an opportunity for slightly more interesting clothing or just sheer boredom of my recently more pared-down look, but I find myself falling in love with structured dresses and tops covered in bold and colourful prints, something I have shown very little interest in before.

Usually I prefer to have a collection of simpler, more functional pieces that can be teamed up to create one cohesive look which packs its punch through symbiosis of footwear/accessory/jewelery/texture/layering. But this all seems to be changing. What I want now is a power piece, the louder the better; clashing colours, punchy patterns and lines and sharp edges, real ‘statement’ pieces.

Potentially it could be utter laziness - the idea of simply throwing on one of these beautiful dresses with a chunky black strap sandal and simple black coat and creating a powerful look with minimal effort would be a dream..

I am really enjoying the recent influx of short films as fashion editorials rather than the conventional two dimensional photographic series. There can now be movement in the clothing, adding an extra dimension to the styling of each garment, a loose narrative and therefore a connection to the editorial. The video dictates how you see each outfit; in slow motion, spinning, twisted or fragmented, creating an altogether more coherent experience.

This shoot, Vice Style’s “Lay It Down”, directed by Claudia Grassl and Tabitha Denholm and styled by Aldene Johnson features some beautiful clothes shared through scenes of three girls moving from twisting torment inside a dark house to eventual sunlight and the inevitable cornfield.

This video is not momentous by any means but there are some lovely fragments of imagery interspersed in its two and a half minutes. The shot of twisted limbs on a bed for example as the spliced scenes depict a claustrophobic anguish through their jarred sequences. The styling is also interesting, initially juxtaposing tactile fabrics in bright fuchsias and reds with the faces of pale and listless models, then playing up to their waif-like appearance dressing them in delicate pastel pink silks and chiffons with subtle additions of textured and twisted pieces like the Rachel Freire jacket shown below and a woollen Hilda Maha jacket. Stolen Girlfriends Club, one of my favourite labels features heavily throughout the short film, the most striking outfit being the sheer-backed cherry red satin dress.

I liked the blood-red velvet cape hung over the dark wooden chair by the bed, in a scene reminiscent of some kind of ritual sacrifice depicting a blonde waif in delicate peach silk underwear.

A big fan of what I like to call “Virgin Suicides Aesthetic”, the scene shown below was one I particularly liked, tinged with a vintage film feel the two models dressed in voluminous tutus tread through golden ears of corn to eventually “Lay it Down” among them.

The men in Stolen Girlfriends Club

From a/w10 “Welcome to Nowhere” collection, I love the shirt detailing, raggedy velvet/corduroy trousers, the two-tone denim jacket, the accessories, I LOVE the double breasted jacket…

SGC have an aweseome aesthetic which i’ve raved about before when discussing the womenswear collection for a/w10. I love that they have a consistent style that continues throughout all collections past, present, for men and women, and additionally have amazing styling too, which showcases their wonderful clothes to such advantage.

Up and coming quirky-labeled ‘Stolen Girlfriend’s Club’ are making wonderful things for A/W10. Already garnering a lot of attention in the fashion world, the pieces are an eclectic fusion of furs, knits, leather and tassels, founded by a predominate palette of grey, black, brown, nudes and pastel pinks, punctuated by sudden flashes of wine-coloured furs and violent blues.

There is an intrinsic feeling of nature, conveyed through both the textures and colours of the fabrics, but also the names of the pieces; “oatmeal”, “bone”, “olive”, making these pieces perfect for A/W.

Highlights include cable-knit shorts and dresses, striped bodies with tasseled shoulders and fur-trimmed brown clunky boots. The line has a casual, relaxed feel and is infused with a feeling of California-esque fashion credo, antipodean warmth and latent 70’s bohemian insinuations. The silhouettes are slim and fitted, with additions of oversized and cleverly-knitted jumpers and jackets.
